As temperatures start to stay consistently warmer, Truetimber is finally getting back out to start fertilizing trees.
Spring deep root fertilization is a very useful practice for promoting healthy plant growth, particularly for trees and shrubs. As the weather warms and your trees start to wake up, they begin to pull nutrients from the soil to start the growing season. Performing a deep root fertilization in the spring can help both healthy and struggling trees get a good boost of nutrients.
The process involves using specialized equipment, in our case a soil probe, to place nutrients deep into the soil, often 6 to 12 inches below the surface. This method targets the root system more effectively than surface-level fertilization, where nutrients can be washed away by rain or evaporate. The deep application also ensures the fertilizer reaches the active root zone, where the plant can absorb it more efficiently.
Deep root fertilization typically includes a balanced mix of macronutrients—nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium—as well as micronutrients like calcium, magnesium, and sulfur. In certain cases we’ll add or subtract ingredients to best help your trees. The timing of the application is crucial, as applying it in early spring, before the plant fully leafs out, helps jump-start the growing season.
Benefits of spring deep root fertilization include enhanced root development, improved drought resistance, increased disease resistance, and overall stronger plant health. For established trees and shrubs, this method also encourages deeper root growth, making them more resilient against storms and other environmental stressors. Regular fertilization in the spring is a proactive step toward long-term plant vitality and beauty.
